The second CD from Poppa Vein, due out sometime this century.

The boys started writing these songs in 2008. The actual recording didn't start until about July of 2009. Hey - why put off until tomorrow what you can put off until the following year!

This collection of songs is a bit different from their explosive debut cd "Bad Blood". While Bad Blood is pretty much a rock and roll album, this CD branches out into broader territory. Sure, there's some rock and roll, but there's also some more mood evoking songs on this CD.

This page is the source for the inside scoop about the songs on In Vein. This page has a bit more info than the Bad Blood CD page, just cuz we want to. If ya don't give a shit, don't read it!

Dead Nuckles came up with the CD title - and Raw says thanks man! After the trying times of getting this music out, that name is fitting!

Raw writes and records the tunes and plays the guitars, keys, and sings. Other friends are involved in various songs and are mentioned in each song's info section.

The main instruments, etc. used for this recording are: 1) Gibson Custom LP Goldtop; 2) Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster; 3) Ibanez 540R; 4) Ibanez AEF30 (acoustic); 5) Ibanez SR405QM Bass; 6) Yamaha RBX270 Bass; 7) Yamaha MO6 Synthesizer; 8) Marshall JCM2000 TSL 100 with 1960A and 1960B Vintage cabinets; 9) Fender Hot Rod Blues DeVille 4x10.

Guitar effects include 1) Digitech Whammy IV; 2) Fulltone Clyde Deluxe Wah, OCD, '70, Mini Deja Vibe; 3) Electro-Harmonix Mini Big Muff Pi.

Many recordings are through the mixer with a BBE Sonic Maximizer inserted.

Note that the current song order is not necessarily the order they'll be on the finished CD.

Setting Sail

Born on 7/4/2010

Raw Meat was playing some guitar on the 4th of July and came up with the opening riff and thought it was cool. The rest of the song followed from there, with the lyrics being inspired by Raw's Navy experiences. This was one of the fastest songs to be recorded on the CD.

The opening riff has been compared to Aerosmith (now that's pretty cool, eh?) by friends of the band. It goes from there into something Raw likes a lot, sort of Uriah Heep inspired vocals doing "Hah", and then into the verse with the old blues guy vocal treatment.

The instrumentation is pretty straight forward on this rocker, a standard Strat on the left rhythm guitar, gold top Les Paul on the leads, Ibanez 5 string bass, B3 patch from the Yamaha MO6. Backing vocals are a single track using the Vocalist live to generate additional harmonies.

Arrangement: Raw Meat
Vocals: Raw Meat
Guitars, Bass, Keyboards: Raw Meat
Drums: EZ Drummer

===============================================

( Verse 1 )
I'm setting sail in the morning
Chart a course straight to you
Cast off all my lines
Won't nothing hold me back from you

( Chorus )
There ain't big enough oceans
Ain't a big enough sea
To drown out my devotion
To have you next to me

( Verse 2 )
I will navigate by stars
The brightest one will lead me to you
My heart will be my compass
It always points straight at you

( Repeat Chorus )

( Solo )

( Bridge )
Drum up a hurricane
Put it in my path
Take the wind out of my sails
You can empty all my gas

Punch a hole into my hull
Throw me over board
I will swim a thousand miles
'Cause you are my reward

( Verse 3 )
I'm getting closer to you now
You're waiting for your ship to come in
I'll drop my anchor by you now
So our new journey can begin

( Repeat Chorus Twice )

Bad Luck

Born on 8/31/2008

The main riff for this song came first, then the lyrics. The riff just sounded cool on the Meat's Les Paul. That was enough to keep it!

For you techno weiny nerds, all of the guitars and bass were recorded direct in (DI) and use Guitar Rig 4 Pro to get the killer sounds! No amps were used in the making of this kick ass tune.

Arrangement: Raw Meat
Vocals: Raw Meat
Guitars, Bass, Keyboards: Raw Meat
Drums: Mister E

Bad Luck

===============================================

( Verse 1 )
I was born on Friday
Was the thirteenth of the month
Doctor did his best
He was a veterinarian
Mama's milk was curdled
When she stuck it in my mouth
Daddy was not there
He o.d.'d on some heroin

( Chorus )
Things are getting better
My old fucked up luck is through
Things are getting better
My luck is turning to
Bad luck

( Verse 2 )
Walked under a ladder
And it fell and broke a mirror
Sheriff came to bust me
Seat belt caught his shiny star
A black cat crossed our paths
And got run over by a train
The train ran off the track
And smashed the sheriff and his car

( Repeat Chorus )

( Solo )

( Bridge )
I've got some bad luck
I hope it lasts
I've had much worse luck
In my past
I know that bad luck
Beats no luck at all
I've got some bad luck now

( Verse 3 )
I sleep in a cardboard box
And live on dumpster food
I wear other peoples clothes
And bum my cigarettes
I see you ignore me
And pretend I am not there
I know if I was in pain
You would not even care

( Repeat Chorus )

Coming To

Born on 7/11/2009

Okay, who hasn't had a morning after a night before? This song is about just such a time. It's more of a free roaming - or is it hungover - wandering around while your brain starts coming back to reality. Just put on the headphones, crank it up and go for the ride.

The intro guitar is the Strat into the DeVille and mic'd. The drums and bass, all keyboard and effects are from the Yamaha MO6 Synthesizer. The lead and backing vocals were all processed through a Digitech Vocalist Live 4; the lead vocal sound is intentional. The lead guitar in the outtro is the LP through the Whammy, with the Clyde and OCD engaged, into the TSL Lead Channel, DI'd. The crunch or power chord rhythm guitar in the outtro is DI'd and played through Guitar Rig 4.

The song got a remix on 5/2/2010 to the current version. If you want to compare the two versions, here's a link to the original version: Coming To (Original).

Both versions were done with Cakewalk Sonar; the original was version 8 Studio and the new one is version 8.5 Producer. The new version utilized a number of the new plugins as well as a different approach to the mixing especially with the reverb treatments.

Arrangement: Raw Meat, Dead Nuckles
Vocals: Raw Meat
Guitars, Keyboards: Raw Meat

===============================================

( Verse 1 )
Coming to, out of a coma
Some good stuff messed up my head
Am I in Phoenix or Tacoma?
Am I alive or am I dead?

( Verse 2 )
The sun squeezes past my eye lid
To revive my consciousness
Is it still in there, or has it hid?
Is it concealed in some dark recess?

( Verse 3 )
The planet forgot me for a while
Left me in peace all by myself
I lay naked covered with nothing but a smile!
I laid for hours in bliss itself!

Bottom Feeder

Born on 5/30/2010

This song was suggested by Randy Huckabone for his upcoming (as of June 2010) movie "Random Doors". He wanted some kinda funky bluesy thing. He wanted something for playing when this sort of low-life couple is doing their thing.

The rhythm guitars are all from a Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster, and the bass is the Ibanez SR405QM. All were recorded direct in (DI) and played back through Guitar Rig 4 Pro. The keys are all from a Yamaha MO6. Vocals are through a DigiTech Vocalis Live 4.

===============================================

( Verse 1 )
You're always looking for ways to expose
Any little titillating secret fact
Digging around and stooping to new lows
To see what dirt you can extract

( Chorus )
Look out for the bottom feeder
They might come feeding on you
They're always just a bit too eager
To take a bite and give it a chew

( Verse 2 )
You should keep your nose pointed straight ahead
Keep it out of my business
Leave me out of your tabloid photo spread
Or any thing else your mind envisions

( Repeat Chorus )

( Solo )

( Bridge )
You're like a catfish lurking in the slough
Swimming in a hazy reality
Never evolved from the primordial stew
Or walked upright into society

It's easy for you to sleep at night
When your mind is always in the dark
With a closed mind you never see the light
Your whole life is a question mark

( Repeat Chorus )

Saturday Night

Born on 3/13/2010

Okay, another song about seeing a chick and wanting her. And possibly about her wanting you back. And the stuff that goes through yer noggin'.

The distorted guitar is the Les Paul DI into Guitar Rig 4. The clean guitar is a Strat also DI and into Guitar Rig 4. The other instrumentation is all from the Yamaha MO6 - there is no bass guitar or other drum generator.

The vocal effects are from Cakewalk Sonar 8.5 Producer plugins using 3 different "telephone" settings.

Guitars, Keyboards: Raw Meat

Saturday Night

=======================================

( Verse 1 )
She was fine on that Saturday Night
I was captured by the color of her hair
I didn't want to stay, I couldn't walk away
Like a statue I just stood there and I stared

( Verse 2 )
She looked at me with a sideways glance
And a little smirk upon her lips
I had to grab a chair before I lost my balance
I couldn't look away from the eclipse

( Chorus )
Life can change on a Saturday Night
Take a chance and you'll see it's true
Come with me and it will be all right
You'll be changed when the night is through

( Verse 3 )
I didn't have to move 'cause she came over to me
Emotion captured my brain in a coup
In spite of myself I could plainly see
There was nothing about her I could refuse

( Repeat Chorus )

( Bridge )
I don't want to lose control
Or think of anyone but myself
I just want to rock and roll
And keep my feelings up on a shelf

But now I'm acting against my will
Doing things that I don't want to do
It's like I swallowed some strange pill
Making me act crazy for you

( Repeat Chorus Twice )

Now I See

Born on 9/1/2008

This song is a bit of poppy sounding feel happy hippy tunage. It started out as a slower tune inspired by Clapton's "You Look Wonderful Tonight" but evolved into whatcha get here.

The boys MAY release the original version too - let 'em know if ya need the other version!

===============================================

( Verse 1 )
These old eyes
Have seen a million faces
Looking for some traces
Of you

( Verse 2 )
These old legs
Have walked a million miles
Searching all the while
For you

( Chorus )
And all the time
You were right in front of me
I was blinded by your love
But now I see

( Verse 3 )
This old heart
Has beat a million heart beats
Looking for one as sweet
As you

( Repeat Chorus )

( Bridge )
You've been here all along
Shining through on me
Why did I take so long
To see

Now that I've seen the light
I'll never look away
You are all that I want
To see

( Repeat Chorus Twice )

I was blinded by your love
But now I see

Don't Hold Too Tight

Born on 12/12/2009

The lyrics and melody for the chorus came first, rolling around in Raw Meat's head for a week or so. He put the rest down and recorded the demo.

The test market - Dead Nuckles and Randy H. in particular - offered a lot of suggestions (that probably means they all thought the first version sucked pickled skunk dick).

In particular they thought the first lyrics were pretty sophomoric - just a bunch of rhyming shit. So Raw came up with another round, the version you can hear here hear here...

Drums: Mister E

Don't Hold Too Tight

===============================================

( Verse 1 )
When we first saw each other's faces
The attraction was certainly contagious
I found you exhilarating and vivacious
And you liked me on an "as is" basis

( Verse 2 )
We got together and things began to change
There wasn't much you didn't try to re-arrange
The only thing left was the blood in my veins
What we had was flushed down the drain

( Chorus )

Don't hold too tight
You can choke the life out of what you got
Don't hold too tight
With some things you only got one shot

We could last forever if you
Don't hold too tight
Our bond could never sever if you
Don't hold too tight

( Verse 3 )
You want me to change my hair
You don't like the very clothes I wear
You don't want to hear me swear
You want me to be a millionaire

( Repeat Chorus )

( Solo )

( Bridge )
I'm not trying to start a revolution here
I'm looking for a lover and not an owner
I will be your partner but not your prisoner
Your love will be it's own executioner
Unless you...

( Repeat Chorus )

( Outtro )

Sweet Love

Born on 4/11/2009

Raw came up with the idea for this when reading Eric Clapton's autobiography (one of a few ideas spurred by that book). It has a touch of Santana influence too.

Raw played this with Crush Monster and Rithum Masheen a few times and it just seemed like a nice little belly rubber.

You'll notice that Raw got to play a bit of trumpet again on this one. There's two trumpet tracks playing a harmonizing part.

Most of the tracks were recorded using Sonar 8.3 Studio. The bass is the Yamaha 4 string. All guitars are DI and use Guitar Rig 4.

( Verse 1 )
Sweet love in the morning
Sweet love in the night
Sweet loving all the time
Sweet loving until you get it right

( Chorus )
What else do you need my sweet love
What else do you need it's so sweet

( Verse 2 )
Sweet love is all we need
Sweet love we can agree
Sweet love all around us
Sweet love brings harmony

( Repeat Chorus )

( Verse 3 )
Sweet love come live in me
Sweet love live in you too
Sweet love live in everyone
Sweet love through and through

( Repeat Chorus Twice )

Next To You

Born on 1/12/2010

A groovy funky beat with a heavy bass inspired by Grand Funk Railroad with a bit of Lenny Kravitz and then a bit of Pat Travers perhaps. Or maybe it's just the Poppa's burstin' through. Either way this tune has a butt shakin' feel.

This song is built around a shuffle drum from Smart Loops Thunder Kit shuffle in the key of C so the 5 string bass can hit some low notes. It sounds tool cool! Add a bit of Yamaha MO6 / Crunchy to get some Deep Purple / Grand Funk Railroad sounding B3. Then a sweet Les Paul lead or two. What more do ya need? Okay, some Fulltone wah? You got it!

===============================================

( Verse 1 )
Next to you diamonds don't shine
They loose their sparkle inside
Next to you planets don't align
Looks like they might collide

( Verse 2 )
Next to you rain ain't wet
Dry before it hits the ground
Next to you I wreck my Corvette
If I drove you around

( Chorus )
Next to you my heart stops
My blood don't flow at all
Next to you my lungs burst
It's dangerous
Next to you

( Verse 3 )
Next to you the sun has a chill
It's snowing in Gila Bend
Next to you time stands still
Our love will never end

( Repeat Chorus )

( Solo )

( Bridge )
I want to spend the day next to you
I want to lay down next to you
I want to wake up next to you
Next to you, next to you

I want to get married next to you
I want to spend my life next to you
I want to get buried next to you
Next to you, next to you

Party With Poppa Vein

Born on 3/26/2009

Here's a live recording! This song was a group effort back when there was a group. It's got Raw, Crush, and Rithum goin' at it. It's a bit rough, especially the solo but it's what they sounded like live.

The song's opening riff is a Pat Travers inspired goody (but don't blame Pat if you don't like it). Then it goes into a Raw Meat sort of simple funky riff. The chorus was mainly from Crush Monster. The lyrics actually went through a few variations before deciding on these.

This recording is from a rehearsal session on 8/2/2008 (how time flies!). It was recorded with a Zoom H2 placed in the middle of the room with the drum kit, bass amp, guitar amps, and PA facing it. The H2 was in Surround Sound mode, recording .WAV files, with the limiter engaged. Not bad, eh? At that point it was probably using Raw's Deluxe American Strat.

===============================================

( Verse 1 )
I been waiting for this
The weekend's finally come
Last Monday morning came with a warning
Five work days 'till I'm done

Friday's finally here
Ain't got to wait one minute more
Grab me some cash and give my face a splash
Now I'm running out the door

( Chorus )
I want to party with Poppa Vein
I want to party with Poppa Vein

( Verse 2 )
Cruisin' down the Papago
Pull into the parking lot
At the biker bar where the boys are going to play
Can't wait for the car to stop

Run in and grab a table
Laugh when she checks my age
Order me a brew, Canadian whiskey and chew
Then Poppa takes the stage

( Repeat Chorus )

( Solo )

( Verse 3 )
The boys are hot tonight
They brought their funk and groove
Drums and amps are loud and they're working up the crowd
And our ears all approve

Tonight was worth the wait
But I don't want it to end
A three piece band with soul and a lot of rock and roll
I want to see 'em again

( Repeat Chorus )

Take me to a party with Poppa Vein
I want to party with Poppa Vein

Tea Bag

Born on 8/2/2009

This is pretty much a straight ahead rocker about a nice refreshing activity, dedicated to our friend Neal N. Dangle. Also, thanks to Dawn and Danielle for being such enthusiastic volunteers and helping us while we tried this teabag thing out.

The main rhthm guitars are the LP, double tracked through the Marshall. The lead and backing vocals were all processed through a Digitech Vocalist Live 4. The bass from the MO6. The B3 is from the MO6, as are the piano and all effects.

The outtro adds two different guitar tracks from the Stratocaster, the center part (the funky riff) is through the Marshall, the right part is through the DeVille. The lead in the outtro is the LP through the Marshall (which is barely audible).

There are live trumpets in the solo part starting about 2:00 and in the outtro starting about 4:58.

Dead Nuckles provided a lot of assistance with the arrangement and lyrics - thanks!

===============================================

( Verse 1 )
I got the hint, yeah I got the clue
You were lookin' for some kind of action
I got it straight, you bit off more than you could chew
You got showered with my reaction, ha

( Chorus )
Tea bag - dip it the water
Tea bag - dunk it all the way
Tea bag - dip it the water
Tea bag - dunk a bag today

( Verse 2 )
I dunked up and down to see what I could do so
You could have a taste in this new fashion
I got the ball rollin', workin' a up hot brew
You swallowed in the heat of passion

( Repeat Chorus )

( Bridge )
Sip, drink
Honey, hollow
Pucker, pink
Savor, swallow

Munch mouth
I'm shooting south
Don't let it leak
Don't spill a drop

( Solo )
Fill it to the brim
Put your lips on the rim
When you come back for more ( and you know you will )
I'll be at your back door ( you can turn around and smile at me )

( Verse 3 )
I offered you the first thing that popped up
You said let's get somethin' straight between us
I asked if you had something we could use for a cup
You threw your head back with a violent thrust

( Repeat Chorus Twice )

( Outtro )
Well, how do you like your tea bag
Do you want one lump or two
You'll want to savor the flavor
When you stir up that strange brew

Let me take out the bag now baby
And I'll pour in the cream
Don't burn your lips baby
It's comin’ out hotter than steam

Well, you can milk it for all it's worth
Until the cup runneth over
It holds a lot within it's girth
Enough for any tea bag lover

And it’s good, good to the last drop
Give the flow through double bag a swish
Once you start it, it's hard to stop
Ooh, it's quite the dish

Now, ooh baby look at your eyes
They're getting big, as big as saucers
Ooh, ooh, and look at your smile
The whitest teeth I've come across here

Dunkin's not just for donuts
This should be everyone's cup of tea
Not bad for a couple of crazy nuts
Hope it's as good for you as it was for me

Hero

Born on 7/12/2008

This is a song about a young boy growing up in the 60's and 70's looking for a role model and finding it in the top guitar players of the day.

The opening riff came about when Meat first jammed with a couple of guys - Rithum Masheen and Crush Monster. The riff lasted longer than those guys.

If it's not obvious enough, the lyrics for the first verse are based on song titles from Cream, the second verse is based on song titles from Jimi Hendrix.

The rhythm guitar is Meat's Gold Top Les Paul playing a Dokken-like riff, recorded straight DI and using Guitar Rig 4. The bass also uses Guitar Rig 4. The B3 is from a Yamaha MO6. Background vocals created by singing through a DigiTech Vocalist Live 4. The outtro spoken voice is from the online demo at http://www.naturalreaders.com/

Arrangement: Raw Meat
Vocals: Raw Meat

===============================================

( Verse 1 )

When I was young I heard the Tales of Brave Ulysses
I used to lay in my White Room, wonder who this is
Through open windows pours the Sunshine of Your Love
Couldn't get enough, I wore the Badges by the Spoonful

( Chorus )

I was a young boy looking for a hero
A man or god, Plato or Cicero
Can you tell me who will be my hero

( Verse 2 )

If Six was Nine, couldn't buy more time, not one more hour
That I could spend All Along the Watchtower
For One Rainy Wish that I could steal or I could borrow
I'll bide my time and I will Wait Until Tomorrow

( Repeat Chorus )

( Solo )

( Bridge )

I looked at religion and history
They didn't offer very much to me
A wall of sound touched my soul
A rock and roll six string hero
